Frequently Asked Questions

What type of shocks do you service?

We specialize in offroad after market shocks typically used in Toyota Tacoma's, 4Runners, Tundra's, Land Cruisers, Jeeps, Raptor and full size pickups as well as SXS shocks. We primarily rebuild OME BP51, Fox Shocks, Carli, King, Icon, but can do most rebuildable shocks if the parts are available.  Contact us if we don't have your brand of shocks listed.

Do you rebuild OME BP51?

Yes! We rebuild OME BP51 shocks.  We charge $1,000 USD to rebuild a set of OME BP51 shocks  and use upgraded seals, oil and bearings to ensure longevity and performance.  We should add that we source the seals for these shocks ourselves as ARB does not offer a kit. We also have a large backstock of BP51 parts and can often repair a damaged shock to put it back into service.

Do Sell OME BP51 rebuild kits?

We do not. This is asked frequently and unfortunately the seals (rebuild kit) aren't the problem when rebuilding BP51 shocks. They require specialized tools for reassembly and we had to make those for our own workbench. Beyond that the regulator assemblies (adjusters) use blind shims that require training to install as you simply cannot put them back together without that knowledge. Finally the bleeding procedure is specific and ideally requires vacuum bleeding to get the air out. Simply put it isn't  shock that can be rebuilt without both specialized knowledge and shock specific tools.

Does 4x4 Shock Tech offer replacement bearings for OME BP51 Toyota coilovers?

If you have  Toyota BP51 coilovers we do offer replacement bearing kits for both the early (pre 2018 build) and late (Jan 2018 -newer) BP51 coilovers. Our kits use USA made bearings and come with new o-rings and spiral locking rings. They replace OME pt# VD11010018SP and OME pt# VD11010019SP. Our kits use better USA made bearings and service 2 coilover assemblies as opposed to the OME part numbers above. These kits retail at $120.00 - call or message to order.

How often should my shocks be serviced?

Use and brand makes a difference here, but typically high performance shocks will benefit from rebuilding between 20-50K miles. Shorter intervals between rebuilds tend to reduce the number of parts required and prolong the life of the shocks themselves.  If your shocks are leaking oil it's time to service them.

Should I remove the coils on my coilovers prior to sending them in?

If you can remove them it definitely will decrease shipping cost by lowering the weight considerably. We do offer that service at $25.00 per unit if they come to us assembled.

What type of oil do you use?

We primarily use Scheaffer's Oil, an extremely high grade  oil made in the USA, in nearly all of our rebuilds.  We only use premium oils  due to their higher corrosion resistance, better lubrication, and extreme temperature range. The result is unmatched performance and longevity for your offroad shock investment.  Fox oil is also available at a slightly higher cost.

What about lower bearings?

Many climates are hard on lower bearings and they often start making noise (squeaking) in the winter as they ingest salty water on the roads. This is particularly a problem on Toyota front suspensions (Coilovers) as the lower mounts of the assembly are directly "in the wind" as they travel down the highway.

All bearings are inspected and replaced if needed as a part of our rebuild process. Replacement bearings incur an additional fee and pricing varies by brand. New bearings typically cost $30-50 installed for each coilover.

Vacuum Bleeding

Whenever possible we vacuum bleed shocks during reassembly. This is done both to degas the oil (Shock oil by nature likes to hold air microscopically) and eliminate any air pockets in the shocks themselves.  It's difficult to maintain consistency in the rebuild process without vacuum bleeding during final assembly and if not done can lead to a shock that feels slightly "squishy" as the air can compress within the oil prior to passing though the shim stack.  If enough air is present oil cavitation and even hot spots can occur leading to poor performance or premature shock failure.  We firmly believe vacuum bleeding is critical to the performance of your shocks.

Steering Stabilizers - Dampers

We do rebuild Steering Dampers. Most common are King and Fox, but we can do others if the parts are available.  We recommend rebuilding the Dampers at the same time as the shocks.
